Manual therapy is a hands-on physical therapy approach using skilled, passive movements to manipulate joints and soft tissues, designed to reduce pain, increase range of motion, and improve function. Techniques include joint mobilization, manipulation, and soft tissue massage, often combined with exercise for optimal rehabilitation of neuromuscular skeletal issues.
Spine mobilization is a manual therapy technique using low- and high-velocity, passive movements to relieve pain, increase range of motion, and reduce stiffness in the spinal joints. These techniques activate pain inhibitory pathways, improve joint mobility, stretch fibrous tissue, and increase pain threshold levels.
Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction by inserting thin needles into myofascial trigger points and tissue sources. It releases tension, improves blood flow, and reduces pain in the muscle or structure. Benefits include immediate pain relief, increased range of motion, and accelerated healing for conditions like tennis elbow, tension headaches, and chronic pain.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK-US) in physical therapy is a non-invasive, radiation-free imaging tool used for real-time assessment of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. It enables therapists to diagnose injuries, guide rehabilitation exercises, and provide biofeedback on muscle activation.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a therapeutic technique using specialized tools—often stainless steel—to detect and treat fascial restrictions, muscle tension, and scar tissue. It improves blood flow, breaks down adhesions, and increases range of motion, commonly treating conditions like tendinitis, runner’s knee, and chronic pain.
Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is a rehabilitation technique using specialized, pressurized cuffs on limbs to safely restrict venous blood outflow while maintaining arterial inflow. By enabling high-intensity strength training results while lifting light loads, it promotes muscle hypertrophy and strength gains in injured or post-surgical patients with limited weight-bearing abilities.
Cupping therapy is a non-invasive treatment using plastic cups to create suction on the skin, increasing blood flow and reducing pain and inflammation. Commonly used for muscle soreness and tension, it works by separating layers of tissue to promote healing.
Physical therapy exercise programs are individualized routines designed to improve strength, mobility, and stability, reducing pain and accelerating recovery. Regardless of your condition, exercise will be the base source of treatment. All of the above components will make this component easier for you to manage.
